The Waikabubak Chair takes its name from the highland capital of West Sumba. The frame is hand-lashed teak — no screws, no mechanical fixings — joined using mortise-and-tenon at the structural nodes and bound with rattan cord at the junctions where the back posts meet the seat rails.
The seat is a single ikat-woven panel commissioned from Marta Lende Hamu and her family in Rende village on Sumba's south coast. Marta's family has been weaving in natural indigo for three generations. Each panel takes one to three weeks to complete on a traditional backstrap loom. No two are the same.
A reading corner, a bedroom accent chair, a single seat at a writing table. The proportions are generous without being wide — it will sit in a 70cm clearance and leave room to breathe.
Weight capacity 120 kg. Designed for interior use; suitable for covered outdoor spaces in dry seasons. See the wood care guide for seasonal maintenance advice.

Tectona grandis from certified Sumba forestry within 80 km of the workshop. Dense, naturally oil-rich, and stable across the humidity range of a tropical climate. The frame is finished in raw linseed oil, applied twice before delivery.
Hand-dyed cotton thread in natural indigo, woven on a backstrap loom by Marta Lende Hamu's family in Rende. The panel is stretched and hand-lashed to the seat rail without adhesives. If a panel is damaged it can be replaced — write to us.
Re-oil the teak frame once or twice per year using raw linseed oil or tung oil — 20 minutes per chair, left overnight to absorb. Avoid silicone-based furniture polish and ammonia cleaners. See full wood care guide.
Brush the ikat seat with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which will fade natural indigo over years. Do not machine wash or soak. Spot clean with cold water only.
